Demand for solar power up 75 percent from previous year

The German solar market is once again on a path to growth. During the first six months of the year, Germany’s Federal Network Agency, the Bundesnetzagentur, reported the installation of new photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of approximately 900 megawatts. This amounts to an increase of around 75 percent compared to the same period in the previous year (515 megawatts).

According to the German Solar Association (BSW-Solar), lower costs of acquisition have in recent months led to a sharp increase in demand for solar power systems, in particular among medium-sized companies. But there has also been an increase – by one third compared to the previous year – in the number of single-family homeowners who have opted to utilize the power of the sun.

According to scientists, however, the pace of photovoltaic expansion is still too low to cover the growing need for green energy in the electricity, heating and mobility sectors, and to reach climate protection targets. "With prices for solar power starting at five cents per kilowatt hour, the new administration in Germany will have to place greater emphasis on photovoltaics than has so far been the case,” says Carsten Körnig, Chief Executive Officer of BSW-Solar.

For many years now, photovoltaics have been expanding worldwide: BSW estimates that this year, an average of 574 new solar modules are installed each minute across the globe. That amount would be sufficient to supply electricity to ten multi-family houses with 15 residential units per building.

From January to June 2017, the approximately 1.6 million solar power systems already installed in Germany produced around 21.8 billion kilowatt hours of solar power, which is around 13 percent more than in the same period during the previous year.
