New Partnership to Strengthen the Solar Energy Sector in Zambia and Malawi

The German Solar Association (BSW-Solar) is entering into a partnership with the Solar Industry Association of Zambia (SIAZ) and the Renewable Energy Industry Association of Malawi (REIAMA). This chamber and association partnership project, funded by sequa, will run for three years. It aims to sustainably strengthen the institutional development of the associations in the areas of organization, services, and communication, support the energy transition in both countries, and enhance collaboration with the solar and storage industries in Germany.

“We are pleased to have found such dynamic and committed partners in SIAZ and REIAMA who are eager to drive the energy transition forward with us”, says David Wedepohl, Managing Director for International Affairs at BSW-Solar.

As part of the cooperation, the associations will initially receive financial support. A long-term expert will provide on-site consulting to foster their organizational independence, increase their value for members, and support their efforts in establishing favorable conditions for the solar sector.

The significance of this initiative is highlighted by recent developments in both countries. Zambia is currently experiencing a severe energy crisis due to ongoing droughts and low water levels at the Kariba Dam, leading to drastic power outages. The government is increasingly focusing on solar energy and has recently introduced net metering and feed-in tariffs to make decentralized generation more attractive.

Malawi also faces major challenges: The electrification rate remains low, and the demand for reliable renewable energy sources is steadily growing. Strengthening the solar association REIAMA is a crucial step toward better representing the industry’s interests and advancing solar energy expansion.

According to Wedepohl, the close cooperation will help to better tap the potential of solar energy in Zambia and Malawi, to combat climate change and to create jobs in the process. At the same time, the market development in both countries may open up new business opportunities for German companies. Interested companies are welcome to contact the BSW-Solar to learn more about cooperation and investment opportunities.

The project will run until at least June 2027.
