Germany‘s annual PV additions remain stable in 2025

The installation of new photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2025 overall remained relatively stable in 2025 compared to the previous year. However, while the newly installed PV capacity of ground-mounted solar parks increased by about 28 percent, the installation of PV on residential and commercial rooftops declined significantly by around 25 percent and nine percent respectively in 2025.

Annual capacity additions of solar PV tripled since 2021

Annual PV capacity additions in Germany in the year 2025 have tripled compared to annual PV capacity additions in the year 2021.

PV Expansion targets in Germany

With stable PV deployment in 2025, the PV industry in Germany is on track to achieve the federal government's expansion targets, provided that the appropriate framework conditions for future PV expansion continue to be created.

Solar power generation expected to overtake lignite

The amount of solar power generated in Germany is expected to overtake total net electricity generation from brown coal – the electricity producer with the highest CO2 emission factor per kWh – in 2025.

Photovoltaics as an economic engine

Solar power is an economic driver if political framework conditions are set in such a way that an accelerated expansion of photovoltaics is possible. This can be seen in the turnover figures of the German solar industry for the year 2024.
