Requirements for Generators 2.0

The European regulation „Requirements for Generators,“ or RfG 2.0, has entered the final round of commentary at the European Commission. The RfG 2.0 serves as the European foundation for all grid connection guidelines across all voltage levels in Europe.

Therefore, following the publication of the RfG 2.0, all TARs (VDE-AR-N 4100/4105/4110/4120/4130) in Germany will be adapted to the new RfG 2.0 within two years.

The new directive primarily includes the following points:

• Stationary battery storage
• Charging and bidirectional operation of electric vehicles
• Grid-forming capabilities

Additionally, there are many detailed changes.

The German Solar Association sees the most significant need for change in the following areas:

Unlike the current requirements in Germany, grid-forming capabilities will be mandatory not only for battery storage but also for all PV systems larger than 10 MW. Since this technology has not yet been tested even in pilot projects for PV and wind systems, these requirements are not feasible.

The overvoltage FRT (Fault-Ride-Through) is to be increased to 130 percent of the nominal voltage, up to 300 V. This demand was derived from the power outage in Spain last year, but it goes too far for low-voltage systems. This change will result in significant efforts for inverter manufacturers, as the hardware design of the inverters will need to be adjusted.

The third important point concerns new regulations for plant modernization. The current formulations would mean that even changes to energy management would require old systems to comply with the new guidelines. In extreme cases, an update to the energy management could necessitate that old systems meet the new guidelines, potentially requiring the replacement of inverters.
